Small Business Using DotMobi

The Wall Street Journal has a piece on dotmobi domains, starting with how they are being used by small businesses. One hostelier said he gets 30 to 40 new calls a month from his site http://www.kilburnie.mobi, which is probably a positive return on the investment. The article also notes that most big brands simply use their dotcom (or whatever) address and detect when the device accessing it is a mobile phone, and deliver the content accordingly. That was always put forward as an alternative to the dotmobi domain by critics of the system, along with the accusation that the domain would benefit mostly registrars who could sell yet another domain name to companies looking to protect their brand. mTLD (the dotmobi registry) “estimates that more than 17 percent of the 475,000 dot-mobi domains it has registered since it launched last summer are in use with live content“. Even considering the short time the domains have been around that’s not a particularly high number. It may go up once more website creation and hosting companies start offering “mobile website packages with .mobi domain name”, and marketing that to their existing customer base.
