US subscribers spent a total of $4.8 billion on mobile data in the fourth quarter of 2006, according to IDC. This accounted for about 13 percent of average revenue per user (ARPU), or $6.74 per month per subscriber, reports RCR News. According to CTIA total data usage for 2006 in the US was $15.2 billion, which shows the growth of data usage within the year.
IDC said that messaging accounted for 48.8 percent of data revenue, 13.0 percent came from content and simple application downloads and 38.2 percent from other business- and consumer-oriented services and content. Verizon had the most retail customers (56.3 million, Cingular grabbed 56.3 million) and was the overall leader in data revenue as well as having the highest data percentage of ARPU. However, Sprint Nextel users spent an average of $8.32 per month on data, while Verizon customers spent $7.91 per month. (release)
