Mobile Music Users Prefer Ad-Supported — Telephia

A survey released by Arbitron and Telephia (of over 2,000 US mobile users) about mobile audio usage has found that users prefer an ad-supported model, as well as a difference in the awareness of various mobile music models compared to how they are used. While over-the-air downloads were the most well-known in the general population, sideloading music was the most common method of listening to mobile music.

The bad news from the survey is that around two-thirds of people who are not currently using mobile audio are “not interested at all” in any of the four major options for accessing mobile audio services.
The survey also found that most current mobile audio users “agree that commercials are a fair price to pay for free content”. More than three quarters of those who download content over-the-air and those who listen to free FM radio held this position, while two out of three subscription radio users think ad-supported free content is fair. Most of the current mobile audio users are male (63 percent) and between 24 and 44 (71 percent). They also spend more time than the general population on nearly every media and entertainment activity — with the one exception being television.
