You have until April 17 this year to file your 2006 taxes. April 15 falls on a Sunday and the next day is Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in the District of Columbia. The IRS belatedly decided to make April 17 the due date for almost everything that would normally be due on the 15th.
Don’t let your printed 1040 instructions fool you:
My IRS tax instructions say I should file by April 16, 2007. Is this correct?
This is not correct. At the time these instructions were approved for printing, IRS believed it was correct. Thus, any IRS form, instruction or publication that currently shows an “April 16, 2007” due date should now be read as “April 17, 2007.”
With that extra time, you could make a video for the TurboTax rap contest and get your taxes done later. Vanilla Ice will announce the winner of the contest on the 15th of April — he must not have heard about the changed 2007 deadline. You might win $25,000 cash or better yet, TurboTax bling made of cubic zirconium. Word!

Don’t get too comfortable with those two extra days though, because if you have any self-employment income, you may need to file estimated taxes for 2007 at the same time you complete your 2006 return. Check out our self-employment tax primer for more information.
