You’re reading it here first. Sources have confirmed to ContentSutra that Mauj Telecom has a new CEO. The new CEO is likely to be Manoj Dawane, formerly the COO of Uttaranchal and UP-West for Bharti Airtel. Airtel has confirmed to us that Manoj Dawane is no longer with the company. We’re currently awaiting a response from Mauj Telecom on the same.

Update:
We’ve just received a confirmation from Manoj Dawane that he’s joined at the CEO of People Infocom, otherwise known as Mauj Telecom. Dawane says that he’s seen the business from the other (operators) side, and as India moves from 150mn to 600mn subscribers in the next couple of years, the ancillary business has lots of scope. He’s joined with an equity stake ESOPS from the company, and has the mandate to first consolidate, then grow the business. Today was his first day with the company. Before joining Mauj, Dawane was with Airtel for three years – last as the COO of Uttaranchal and UP-West, before which he was the CMO for Mumbai Circle. Dawane had joined Airtel after four years at Hutchison Max.

We’d earlier broken the news to you about Arun Gupta resigning as the CEO of Mauj Telecom. Mauj Telecom provides mobile games, wallpapers, ringtones and other content. The company had recently signed a deal with Eros for Bollywood content. It has about $10 million in venture funding fom blue-chips VC funds such as WestBridge Capital, Intel Capital and Sequoia Capital.

Update: We’ve received an official confirmation of the same from Mauj. The release is, well, in the comments.

Corrigendum: Dawane has received ESOPS from Mauj Telecom, not an equity stake.

Rajesh comment is really funny. This surely sounds like sour grapes…if only VCs could get fooled so easily. By the way, it would be interesting to see how Indian vas companies expanding internationally will fare. Any thoughts anyone?

It is rather sad that people like 'Rajesh KP', obviously a disgruntled VC who could not get in to the Mauj round or a competitor of Mauj who cannot keep up, use the power of the Internet to malign people and companies. Since the medium is a democratic one ther is not much compani such as Contentsutra can do to evict people like a 'Rajesh KP' but hopefully the Internet, over time, will evolve into a medium where every comment can be traced back just like a phone call can. Then people such as 'Rajesh KP' would dissapear back into the forest just as fast as they came out. Being an ex-employee of mauj and a close folower of the indusrty I know what value they have built and where the company is going. Dont know much about Manoj but based on his exp. it seems like he would do well at mauj. The company has a bunch of smart ppl and is backed by a good group and corporate leadership. Wiht leadership in place at company level am sure they will emerge as stroing player in this space and am sure Manoj will benefit a lot from a position and company like this.

well Mauj is India's biggest scam on the VAS space. They did all overvaled deals paying ridiculas MGs to pump valuations and then raise funding to hopefully get the T-Series license…. when the game was up Arun jumped the ship..

it will be interesting to see how Manoj (who is a very smart cookie) is able to salvage the siutation. He is the last hope of the VC's who were misled into investing so much money at a very high valuation.

Esops Vs Equity: Interesting. I guess Dawane could have bought out Mauj from Mittal with the Airtel Esops (if he was eligible)…just kidding! All the best!
By the way, who all are eligible for esops at Airtel…I mean from what level (designation)?

Manoj Dawane owning an equity stake in MAUJ Telecom seems unlikely. There were rumours earlier as well with regards to Arun Gupta owning equity in the company, but don't think it was true. It was clarified that Arun Gupta was a part of the ESOP plan of Mauj.

It is very likely that Manoj Dawane too might be a part of the ESOP plan of the company, but then so are numerous other employees of the company. Having ESOPS doesn't mean that an employee or senior management become equity holders in any particular company.

  7. this is one the most interesting news i came across recently . i have meet Manoj for a couple of time and i am a big Fan of his ability to negotiate and persuade folks .

now that he knows all the tricks used by telcos to squeeze Vendors it will be interesting to see how he uses his "insider" knowledge when he is on the other side of table .

it's a test case for the authenticity of a proverb i heard in Childhood .
"set a thief to catch a thief "

lets see what happens next .
