In an interview with the Hindu, Bharti Airtel President and CEO Manoj Kohli says that Bharti will be able to launch 3G services only within 6-9 months after allocation of 3G spectrum. Now, reports have been published in the past about 3G by the year end. I’m told that the onus is on the defense, which on re-allocation, will have to procure new equipment and test the spectrum before completely vacating spectrum for commercial use. It doesn’t help that the policy is yet to be announced…
Kohli mentions that Bharti Airtel is deploying WiMax, and sees WiMax and WCDMA complementing each other. Airtel intends to launch services related to music, messaging and mobile commerce in the coming year, and Kohli sees delivery of Digital media content over multiple channels – “Mobile, DSL, DTH, IPTV, 3G, HSDPA, using common back end and service delivery platforms” as a key trend.
