As mobile payments and banking getting a lot of buzz at CTIA, Nepal Telecom will introduce a range of mobile financial services after signing a deal with India’s Bharti Telesoft and Nepalese partner ITNTI, who have also brokered deals with various vendor and banking partners. The deal will give subscribers a SIM card and “stored wallet cash card” which will let them carry out P2P money transfers and top-up mobile accounts, as well as a “ready to transact” bank account, reports Thomson NewsEdge. There will be a per transaction charge levied to the subscriber, which is where Bharti et al will get their revenues. The mobile penetration in Nepal is very low…Nepal Telecom has about 300,000 subscribers and is the incumbent telco with the largest GSM base. However, there are about 28 million people in the country and around 5 mobile users for every cash-card holder. “Since most Nepalese subscribers do not have access to bank branches, “operators can definitely look forward to improving their subscriber base,” said the Bharti Telesoft spokesman.”
