Viacom Happy to Pilot Safe Harbor

In a post on the irrepressible Valleywag today, Nick Denton lambasts Viacom for not having its copyright infringement policies straight across its properties. Apparently VH1’s “Best Week Ever” blog is still happy to use YouTube to embed clips that are obvious copyright infringers, including content from Fox.

And Viacom’s own pet video sharing site IFILM (soon to be taken out to pasture) allows users to upload infringing clips like the one embedded below — taking advantage of the safe harbor provisions of the DMCA that Viacom’s general counsel has argued don’t apply to YouTube.

NewTeeVee has to agree with Valleywag on this one — seems like Viacom’s pot is using its high-priced lawyers to call YouTube’s kettle black.
