Hollywood’s standards for digital cinema came in for much criticism at FICCI frames, reports Variety. Rajaa Kanwar, Vice Chairman of digital movie distribution company UFO Moviez called the standards rigid and unrealistic, saying that interoperability is an issue and the cost of a DCI compliant system – too high at $125,000. At the same time, in India, theater chains do not generally invest in technology, and so UFO Moviez leases out digital projection systems, charging as little as $4.60 per screening for a 2K projection equipment. The company has installations in 625 theaters in India.
Also mentioned was the fact that Hollywood’s ban on supplying digital prints to China had led to China developing its own low cost equipment, and announcing its own standards.
