CTIA: Adobe Names Verizon Exclusive Carrier Launch Partner In USA

I’m not sure what the rationale behind this is for Adobe, but it has agreed for Verizon Wireless to be its exclusive launch partner in North America for delivering all new Adobe mobile applications…it doesn’t say how long the launch exclusivity lasts for, but it shouldn’t be a great deal of time — the whole point about Adobe’s products is that they are ubiquitous. The first product launched under this deal is its FlashCast technology, which is an application that uses channels to display rich mobile content. Users can choose what they want in their channels (from the options offered), which include sports, weather, news, entertainment, music and so on. The data is downloaded in the background and cached for when the user wants to view it, so it doesn’t need a connection to view. Cnet has a video on it.
Verizon’s FlashCast offering will include a series of basic and premium channels across a variety of handsets and is expected to launch in the second half of 2007, although there’s no mention of price. (release)

Adobe has also announced FlashCast will be on Chunghwa Telecom in Taiwan before the end of this year (release) and the FlashCast i-channel service on Japanese carrier DoCoMo has surpassed 10 million subscribers in 18 months, about 20 percent of DoCoMo’s customers. (release)
