PS3 Outsells Wii in the UK While Breaking Sales Records – UPDATE

The British have gone crazy for the PS3. So much in fact that the new platform has become the fastest selling home console in the country during its debut. According to MCV, Sony sold 165,000 PS3s, or 75% of its launch stock, in the UK last week. The release is second only to Sony’s PSP which sold 185,000 units in its opening weekend back in September of 2005.

By comparison, Nintendo sold 105,000 Wii’s in its debut last December, and Microsoft sold 70,000 units during its launch in December of 2005. Wii held the previous home console record in the UK before the PS3 hit the Isles some several months later than originally expected due to production delays.

There’s no way to spin the positive Sony news in a negative light, but it should be noted that the UK and Europe in general have traditionally been the most loyal of global PlayStation territories. Giga has contacted Sony for comment on what has been perceived so far as a lone triumph in an otherwise lackluster PS3 release.

UPDATE: Sony sent us the following statment via email: “This really demonstrates the power of the PlayStation brand and the desire from the consumer to join the high definition gaming evolution. Given the price, it also shows that Europeans understand the value we are providing in future-proof technologies that will stand the test of time.”
