I was astounded by the US carriers rising the price to send an SMS considering it’s the most profitable use of data on a per kilobyte basis by a long way. I guess the idea is to get people to sign up to bundles of messages, which is probably more than they’d normally send (in the US) and provides a more stable revenue stream. While some people will simply send less messages, other people may be convinced to switch to the bundle and in so doing end up sending more message — and being less wary about using SMS to interact with companies’ promotions. The WSJ has a breakdown on the various packages the carriers offer, and points out that with the new price rises the number of SMS you have to send to go over the cost of a package falls from 50 a month to 34.
