Multimedia software provider Thin Multimedia and mobile TV chip vendor Siano Mobile Silicon have teamed up to create mobile TV receiver chip that reads both DVB-H and DMB, which will be demo’d at CTIA note EE Times. The main benefit of this sort of thing (not this chip in particular, but multi-tech chips in general) will be to increase the economies of scale for handsets, and reduce the handset manufacturers need to pick a particular standard. Qualcomm has already gone this route, launching a chip that reads both MediaFLO and DVB-H — probably in an attempt to give MediaFLO the economies of scale that DVB-H will enjoy.
