Motorola needs both a short-term fix and a long-term strategy to revive its fortunes, writes the New York Times. After revising its first quarter sales expectations dramatically downward Motorola needs another hit phone like the Razr was a couple of years ago to reverse the falling sales of recent quarters. The thing that must be really nerve-wracking is that the handsets that are coming out in the short-to-medium term are already in the pipeline…
Even if one of those does happen to be a hit that still leaves Motorola with a hits-based business in an industry where success is better assured by consistent results. “Success has been much more about having the right, broad mix of products and being really, really efficient about your supply chain and manufacturing,” said Charles Golvin of Forrester Research.
