We first reported Tuesday that a joint venture between NBC Universal, News Corp. and possibly other content partners could come this week. We’ve confirmed that the two companies plan to announce it today with NBCU and News Corp. as the only equity partners to start; room is reserved for other equity players. Time Warner, once an unlikely participant, is considering both content and distribution (AOL), drawn by distribution deals with MSN, Yahoo and MySpace. Sony Pictures is less likely now as a content partner; it may not have enough content cleared to start. We also have confirmed that content partners do not all have to be equity partners; non-exclusive content partners will not hold equity. Video will be shared, embedded — and free — supported by an ad network the partners say will have major distribution at launch.
— We’ve mentioned NBBC as a part of this: NBBC will provide the syndie player/distribution.
More to come.
Update: We’ve been told NBCU chief digital officer George Kliavkoff will be interim CEO.
