3 ways to get quick mobile Woot! notifications

Woot_logoIt’s time I come forward and admit it to the group, so here goes. *stands up* "Hi…my name is Kevin….and I’m a Wooter." *sits down* OK, now that I’ve come clean, I suspect many of you are Wooters too. By that I mean you actually don’t want to pay full price for your gear. Yes, I know it sounds horrible, but if I can admit it publicly, so can you.

Now that we’ve all come clean, let’s talk about how to stay on top of the Woot! deals. Sure you can hit up the website each day, but that’s sooooo Web 1.0, right? ;) Here are three easy methods to get Woot! information as quickly as possible…well, unless you’re hiding in a closet at the Woot! warehouse, that is.

Let’s start with a basic method you’re likely already using for other web-based information: RSS. You can subscribe to the Woot! home page just by adding this link to your RSS reader of choice. If you’ve got a connected mobile device and an RSS reader, you’ll have Woot! product updates available as often as you can refresh your feeds.

What if you’re out and about and don’t have access to the web? Hopefully, you’ve got access to e-mail via a handheld device. If so, hit up the WootAlerts site and sign up for their free service. Each time there’s a new Woot! offering, WootAlerts will send a short e-mail to the address you specified during sign-up. The brief notes are intended to give you the basics: product name and price, which is perfect for a handheld device. No need to scroll around or wade through a lengthy e-mail.

Last up is the most interesting method; to me, anyway. While some folks understandably have no interest in Twitter, a real-time service does have benefits. Thanks to Dave Winer, we’re testing the JK River which populates Twitter with our posts and short links. Now, you can do the same with Woot! thanks to the Woot! Twitterbot.  Just add http://twitter.com/woot to your Twitter friends and you’ll get notifications via Twitter widgets/gadgets or SMS to your phone if you’ve configured Twitter for those updates.

In the end, you’ll have to hit up the Woot! site if you actually want to order an item you were notified about. Still, quickly knowing what’s available might save you some time and even help get your order in before the item is sold out. I’m sure there’s even more ways to get Woot! notifications on the run, so if you’ve got others, be sure to share with the rest of WA, that is: Wooters Anonymous. ;)
