Google’s South-East Asia managing director of sales and operations, Richard Kimber, has moved to hose down rumors that the search behemoth is working on a handset, reports the SMH. “At this point in time, we are very focused on the software, not the phone,” The Australian Financial Review today quoted Kimber as saying during his speech at the Search Engine Room conference in Sydney.” Google’s chief evangelist Vinton Cerf has already said that building hardware would be a dramatic shift from the company’s business model. While neither of those is a flat out denial of any work on a Google phone, they’ve tried to make it pretty clear that a Google handset is not in the companies plans anytime soon. Since Google lets its engineers work on their own projects the company can’t really say that no-one in Google is or will work on a Google phone.
