Opera Software has confirmed in a press release that the Nintendo DS Browser, powered by Opera, will be released to the North American market on June 4, 2007. The browser has already been released in Japan (July 2006) and Europe (October 2006), where it retails for 3,800 Yen and 39.99 Euros, respectively. Nintendo of America, who will be publishing the software in North America, has yet to announce pricing details.
A representative from Opera Software was not able to provide sales figures for the European and Japanese versions of the browser, telling GigaGamez, “We are unable to disclose actual sales figures for the DS Browser in Europe and Japan, per our NDA with Nintendo. However, we can inform you that the DS Browser has sold very well in both regions.”
The company, which has been releasing web browsers since 1997, is also responsible for the browser for the Nintendo Wii. The beta browser for Wii has been available since December 2006, while the full version will be released this month in North America. Users of both products will be able discuss issues in Opera’s forums (Wii flavor here and DS action here) Opera Software also developer web browsers for PCs, set-top boxes, mobile phones, and embedded devices.
Opera has a small, but extremely loyal following in the PC market and its products are generally well reviewed. Getting a solid browser on the Nintendo DS makes the system more of a PDA for youngsters than anyone thought it would be. It’s already capable of short-range messaging, it will soon have VoIP functionality, and this June, it will have a web browser to boot.
