Five GigaGamez Questions for Epic's Mark Rein

Epic Game’s vice president Mark Rein (affectionately known to some as “Purple” Rein) is known for making strong (and sometimes controversial) comments and for doing a masterful job at promoting the company’s Unreal Engine. He’s been at the forefront of Epic’s burgeoning success— Gears of War is arguably the most successful Xbox 360 title to date and it seems like half the console developers in the world are Unreal Engine licensees. I shot over five rapid-fire questions to get Rein’s thoughts on the current state of game development from a business point of view— and his fascination with a certain exotic fruit.

GigaGamez: What is the biggest change in game development with this generation of consoles?

Mark Rein: The large cost of creating high-definition content.

GG: How has Epic adapted to this change?

MR: Our tools team worked very hard to create leading-edge tools to give us an advantage in this area.

GG: Why has the licensing of the Unreal Engine exploded over the last few years?

MR: See the answer to #2.

GG: Does Epic use Gears of War as a sales and marketing tool to promote the Unreal Engine? If so, do you think it takes away from the game’s artistry?

MR: When we’re selling someone on the engine we generally show them the tools pipeline because that’s the best way to sell the engine. We use both Gears and Unreal Tournament 3 content to do those demos.

As for taking away from the game’s artistry, no. The game is what it is.

GG: Why do you like mangostines so much?

MR: They are the most amazingly delicious fruit I have ever tasted.
