The DS is one of the best things to ever happen to Nintendo. Since its initial release, the DS has sold over 38 million units worldwide, and sales aren’t really slowing down. In fact, Nintendo has now shipped over 15 million units to Japan alone. Now, contrast that with the Sony PSP, the DS’ direct competition. The PSP has shipped over 20 million worldwide, but, according to Bloomberg, only a little over 5 million in Japan. Why is that?
The biggest problem that the PSP faces is its software lineup, which is weak to say the least. With the exception of a few breakout titles, the PSP has nothing to show for its time out on the market. While, in America, Sony has enjoyed the success of the Grand Theft Auto series sales, Japan hasn’t seen that much in the way of must-have software. Recently, in Japan, a new Monster Hunter title was release (Monster Hunter Portable 2nd), which spiked sales, but, even with that, the PSP still couldn’t keep up with the out-of-stock Nintendo DS. It’s almost funny that the PSP is suffering from a lack of the exact same thing that the other Sony systems have plenty of: games.
