At least telco is being strategic about it: the Denver-based telco Qwest may forgo spending billions to build a full IPTV service (unlike Verizon and AT&T), and could opt for a VOD-only platform, the company CEO Dick Notebaert told WSJ. By avoiding broadcast TV for IPTV, Qwest would circumvent the need to get permission from cities, something which has been thorny for the other two bigger companies.
The company, however, would still have to sign deals with TV and movie studios, which the story says would be difficult as companies go direct through their own websites. The story also notes that Notebaert’s vision is similar to the product AT&T offers to regions where U-Verse won’t be available. HomeZone utilizes a TV set-top box that integrates satellite signals from EchoStar and a DSL feed from AT&T.
