And here we have the inevitable result of the commoditization of the handset business… Mobile Entertainment reports that ConnectID (run by Mobile Streams) will launch its own handsets in August to “front-load” the market with its location based content and services. It claims to have made a chip that improves the LBS capabilities of GSM devices using Assisted GPS, but rather than try and sell them to the major handset manufacturers it will make its own devices with the chips and attempt to sell them directly to operators. The company will also make single-purpose location-aware devices such as pet collars.
