San Mateo-based Gemini Mobile Technologies has raised $20 million from Goldman Sachs, which joins existing Japanese investors Mitsubishi-UFJ, Mizuho, and Tokyo Marine. Gemini plans to use the funds for general business purposes and international expansion. The company recently launched eXplo, a 3D community platform for mobile phones that allows users to chat, share photos and shop in a rich graphical world. It is the basis of a mobile community on Softbank called S! Town, which gained 100,000 subscribers in the last four months. It also has an MMS solution (HyperScale) which has been adopted by several carriers around the world. (release)
