World of Warcraft, the juggernaut of online games, has now reached the 8.5 million subscriber mark. In case anyone was wondering, that puts it squarely at 8 million more subscribers than EverQuest ever had. So, seeing that figure should really kind of dull the news that the Burning Crusade, the first official expansion for WoW, broke single month sales records everywhere.
The day that the Burning Crusade expansion was released, Blizzard sold 2.4 million copies, which is currently the most day-one sales for anyone, and according to statistics, the most any PC game has sold in its entire first month of sales. So, in its first month of sales, it’s not surprising to hear that the Burning Crusade sold 3.5 million copies, thus cementing itself into the top spot. The real kicker is that it hasn’t been released in China yet, though it’s questionable how many people will be playing due to all the recent Internet controversy.
