Sinclair CEO Sees Cash In Mobile TV Carriage

David Smith, the CEO Sinclair Broadcasting Group, told a Bear Stearns media conference that “there could be $20 million a month or more in new revenues from retransmission payments for content delivered to mobile devices taking just half of one study’s predicted user appetite for TV over portable devices”, reports Broadcasting & Cable. It’s hard to tell from the article, but I think he was refering to revenues for the US market — he later said that retransmission payments could dwarf other areas, with the mother load being “all the content we shove through the pipe that people will pay for worldwide”. In its fourth quarter results Sinclair predicted that its revenue from retransmission payments in 2007 would be $48 million, almost 90 percent more than the $25.4 million generated in 2006.
