Neeraj Roy On Mobile Entertainment; Amateur Content Vs Branded Content

Neeraj Roy, MD of Hungama Mobile talks to Business Standard about their push towards mobile entertainment. Mobile devices are evolving: increase in storage and ability to connect to other devices so that screen size no longer remains an issue; there will be 700 million smart phones globally by 2007 end. Globally, VAS revenue is expected to touch $124 billion by 2010. Hungama Mobile is shifting towards mobile entertainment and by 2010, Roy expects mobile entertainment to account for 70 percent of their revenue. Five of the ten “made for mobile” movies from Director Sanjay Gupta’s Dus Kahaniyan are expected to be released in April.
Interestingly, Roy says they prefer branded content over amateur content on the mobile, which explains their tie-ups with TV channels and mobile studios…
branded content is probably a safer bet than amateur content…though I’m wondering if it truly reflects consumer preferences.
