The SMH has a good look at how TV shows are using the internet and mobiles to provide more content for their viewers, and how they will have to. The main idea is to have the online and mobile content be an extension of the TV shows, rather than just add them — and it’s not to gain viewers, it’s to keep viewers by providing them with what they’ve come to expect. For example, Australian Idol started putting online the full songs that were played on the show after viewers posted them on YouTube and people went there to view them.
“Anderson doesn’t think the online and, mobile elements of Big Brother encourage more people to watch the show but rather provides them with the multi-platform experience they want…”People don’t consume media any more through one device – they expect it to be on all devices,” she says. “And the fact that they’re then taking that device with them … and they can access it any time, is really how a whole new generation of media consumers behave.”
There’s no breaking news here, but it’s a good read for what is happening with TV shows.
