Roundup: Adult Content, Rare Tones, McDonald’s Mobile Promo

–The recent experience of Canadian telco Telus in offering adult content has brought out the indepth articles on adult content on mobile phones. CNet has a good piece on the issues preventing North American telcos from offering adult content, and the fact that as the mobile internet becomes more open it will be less relevant. Business 2.0 also has a piece on the subject.
–The Center of Biodiversity is offering free ringtones of sounds by endangered species in a bid to raise public awareness of the issue, especially youth, reports AP. “In addition to the wolf and the whale, there are ringtones from several species of frogs from around the world, a few South American birds and North American owls.”
–McDonald’s has launched a campaign to promote Filet o Fish, reports ClickZ News. There’s particular emphasis placed on the mobile component, which is part of the whole campaign in store, banner ads, packaging and so on. The company will give customers access to free games, wallpapers and ring tones associated with the Filet O’ Fish, although I can’t see that as being much of a drawcard.
–The Chicago Tribune has a story about the M:Metrics survey we reported on a couple of weeks ago showing that a lot of European mobile TV users had discontinued the service. This quote jumped out at me: “Marketers knew that price was an issue but were interested to learn that so many customers were turned off by poor quality and reliability, said Paul Goode, senior analyst with M:Metrics, which conducted the study for Tellabs…”We were surprised by just how much value users place on quality and reliability,” he said.” I sincerely hope that’s an anomaly, and that most people in the industry aren’t surprised by people wanting good, reliable service.
