New Content Is Driving Force Behind Mobile & Portable Device Sales

ITNews reviews a recent report by Instat that argues users are no longer so interested in owning new gadgets. Put simply, it’s new content and users’ desire to access it on-the-fly that are driving growth in the sales of portable devices such as MP3 players, DVD players and digital radio receivers. By 2010, the market research firm expects worldwide unit shipments of digital radio receivers to reach 26 million. (There are no comparison figures in the article and ditto for the Instat website.) Shipments of portable media players are expected to slow as a result of “the widening market penetration of these devices.” Press release
