Hutch, Airtel Offer Mobile Radio

Hutch is offering Mobile Radio via VAS to its subscribers, and I just don’t understand the pricing: As per Tech 2.0, it’s a dial-in service (123599) priced at Rs.3 per minute, with categorized channels with 40-50 songs per category and the ability to create a playlist. It’s intended for those with low end handsets without embedded FM receivers. Hutch plans to make the service subscription based, and at 30 to 50 paise per minute, and may look to serve adverts.
They’ll have to offer it for free, if they plan to serve adverts. I’m just wondering if there’s even a market for such a service in the first place – as was pointed out by one of the panelists during the IAMAI Digital Summit recently, the demand in tier-2 towns is for mobile handsets with radio.
Meanwhile, Airtel has also launched a mobile radio service via VAS in the Maharashtra and Goa circles, reports Business Standard. We’ve written to Airtel for more details on the same.
