India’s Online Tutoring Companies Rake In $15 Million A Year

Here are some numbers on the online tutorial market. A PTI article quotes K Ganesh, CEO and founder of TutorVista.com, as saying that India currently earns $15 million from online tutoring. This is 10 per cent of the total market share for online tuition globally. According to Ganesh, this number is “expected to swell to $2.4 billion within three years.”
Online tutoring is essentially a cost arbitrage game. Indian teachers provide tutoring services at a fraction of the cost in countries like the United States, UK and other European countries. For instance, Indian teachers charge a third or a fourth of $40-100 per hour what the teachers in the US charge. As for teachers in India, they are paid about Rs 12,000-14,000 a month, and they work about seven hours a day from the comforts of their home.
