Google thinks mobile phones will be the biggest driver of internet worldwide. Vinton G Cerf, Vice-President and Chief Internet Evangelist of Google Inc, who is on a visit to India, said: “Mobile phones are very important new factors in Internet revolution. I anticipate enormous new applications on mobiles.”
Cerf’s, who is widely known as co-inventor of the Internet, is significant since India is largely a mobile country. India has only 40 million internet users (of 1.13 billion population) while it has 156 million mobile users as of last month. Globally, the internet user base has grown to one billion from a mere 50 million in July 1997. Asia contributes with nearly 390 million. On the other hand, there are 2.5 billion mobile phones in the world and it’s growing.
