Mobile Data Beginning To Fulfill Promise — ABI

ABI Research reports that mobile data and content is beginning to fulfill its old promise of revenues, reports Tekrati. The analysts reckon that “3G subscribers are providing a much-needed shot in the arm for mobile operators, because they deliver an average revenue per user (ARPU) that is 5% to 20% percent greater than the average”. For the past couple of years voice ARPU has been falling, and revenue from non-voice services haven’t compensated for that.
“Operators are now looking to YouTube Mobile, Jamster and Warner Music for content to excite and entertain consumers…Messaging platforms such as Research In Motion’s BlackBerry devices and enterprise solutions are driving up data traffic and non-voice revenue contributions.”
Currently non-voice revenue represents between 15-29 percent of operator revenue depending on the market — although some of that increase is just a reflection of falling voice revenue. Of that, mobile Internet downloads and data now contribute a very respectable 3% to 17% of total service revenue.
