Atomic Moguls, the fantasy game start-up led by former NBA exec Brenda Spoonemore, has closed its first round of funding with Second Avenue Partners as the lead investor. The round was in the low seven figures. Mike Slade from Second Avenue joins the board; an executive from Amazon also sits on the board. It’s unclear whether Amazon has invested cash in the company but it is partnering with Atomic Moguls. The small Seattle-based start-up, which is focusing on entertainment fantasy games, is staffed completely by ex-Starwave employees, including Spoonemore, who is president and CEO. Slade, too, was at Starwave. The first product is FantasyMoguls.com, a movie-based fantasy site still in beta; players draft movies instead of players, creating their own “studio” and marketing “their” movies across their social networks. Among the ways players earn points: IMDb review scores. IMDb is owned by Amazon, which has been expanding its social media and community efforts. I spent a little time with Spoonemore this afternoon in Las Vegas, where she is working on her last NBA Tech Summit. She calls the concept “distributed marketing” with advanced players actively promoting the movies they’ve chosen.
P-I: John Cook has more. He puts the funding amount at about $1 million.
