MTNL intends to increase the number of channels it is offering in Delhi to 72 by the end of February, reports exchange4media. Currently, MTNL offers a choice of only 21 channels in Delhi, and 100 in Mumbai. Reliance, according to the report, also plans to launch IPTV channels in at least 10 cities in October.
If ever there was an opportunity to capture marketshare for MTNL, it was in January, when several parts of metro cities in India shifted to digital. For most consumers, DTH and CAS remain the only two options. We’ve written in the past about the confusion in MTNL’s pricing, and this inconsistency in offering across cities just adds to the confusion in media reports. Thankfully, they’ve now updated their website with the plans, but it doesn’t cover pricing for video on demand and other features. It’s a similar situation with MTNLs broadband offering – lack of consistency in plans and value added services. They’ve got the last mile connectivity which most other broadband players don’t, and they’re not making full use of it…about time the last mile was unbundled, I say.
