Doordarshan plans to digitize around 45 years of footage of its studio recordings, and create an online archive, reports Business Standard. The total cost of the project is expected to be around Rs.22.5 crores, and is expected to take four years.
Post digitization, says Kamini Dutt, Director Archives for DD, the content will be available for repurposing and webcasting, as well as for research and sale of VCDs and DVDs. DD has so far grossed Rs.2 crore from sale of archival DVDs and VCDs, and intends to sign an MoU with IndiaPost for sales and distribution, on a revenue sharing or commission basis.
Question is – who owns that archival footage, and shouldn’t the taxpayer be allowed access to that content at a nominal cost instead of a premium, since the taxpayer has effectively already paid for its creation and distribution? Anyway, does anyone remember this really old animation which used to air on DD? I’m feeling a little nostalgic today. :)
