Australian encumbent Telstra has flicked the switch on its latest upgrade to its NextG network, which will see theoretical mobile speeds hit 14.4 Mbps, reports Australian IT. It’s a nice figure, but most of the handsets sold by Telstra only handle theoretical speeds of 1.8 Mbps, with a few being capable of a software upgrade to 3.6 Mbps.
Telstra is also claiming a range record with the latest upgrade, reports Australian IT in another article. The upgrade extends the range of base towers from 50 km to 200 km, with data speeds of 2.3 Mbps being recorded at 200 km during testing — Telstra says its the furthest range launched in a commercial network, but I have no way of checking that. This is especially important in Australia, which has a lot of empty space. I have to admit I was surprised that I had a signal all along the 12 hour drive from Sydney to Bendigo.
