Presidential Candidates Vie For Blog Primary

While the first actual state primaries for the 2008 presidential election are about a year away, there is a primary happening right now in the blogosphere, as a feature in the WSJ noted. And considering the frenzied pace, it’s not surprising that while the piece highlights John Edwards as the most assertive of the 17 other presidential candidates in courting the blogosphere, he’s also experiencing some controversy in that realm as well. Two bloggers have quit the Edwards campaign in the past week after being accused of anti-religious bigotry because of their past blog entries, the WSJ and others, such as the NYT, reported.
Aside from the Edwards contretemps, the main news is that both Republican and Democratic candidates have been buying ad space on blogs, suggesting huge revenues from politics are not the sole property of TV anymore. And with online ad spending associated with politics expected to reach $80 million, things even look good for the middlemen. In particular, the WSJ article points to the growth of site like Blogads, the North Carolina-based blog ads service.
For now, online ad spending is comparatively small: a standard-size weekly ad purchased through Blogads costs $2,900 on the progressive site DailyKos for example.
