The headlines for Japan’s Softbank earnings results are a little confusing, with some saying that profit has tripled and others saying it’s fallen by 66 percent, depending on what profit they’re refering to. First, Softbank reported good news with 189,000 mobile subscriber acquisitions in the fourth quarter, turning around Vodafone’s habitual bleeding of customers. That brings the total to 15.49 million.
As Reuters reports, Softbank’s quarterly operating profit was 84.7 billion yen (US$701 million), a strong increase on the 23.5 billion yen for the same period in 2005. However, net profit fell by 66 percent to 7.5 billion yen (US$61.89 million), due to “a heavier tax burden and a larger allocation of Yahoo Japan Corp. profits to minority shareholders”, although other sites also cited a strong increase in marketing costs as responsible for the fall.
