Video games are big business and, because of that, they’re getting more attention than ever… even from the government. In a bid to keep game developers working in France, the French government has offered to offer a tax credit for up to 20% of development costs for games “with a cultural dimension.” So, in short, France is offering money for games that are unmistakably French.
According to Reuters, The Ministry of Culture has released a statement entailing their desire to offer tax credits to developers. This move hopes ensures that the French developers will want to stay in France. The ministry has said that the proposed measure “recognizes the cultural character of the video game, which involves several branches of artistic talent: writers, directors, graphic artists, musical and sound creators.”
The European Commission is looking over the proposal, which should be completed in a few weeks.
