Don’t Auction WiMax Spectrum, ISPs Tell TRAI

ISPAI, the Internet Service Providers Association of India, has asked the TRAI to not auction WiMax spectrum, fearing that larger telecom players will raise the price beyond the reach of standalone ISPs, reports the Hindu. The TRAI, in a consultation paper, had questioned the need for such a large number of ISPs in India.
I think auction is anti-competition and anti-consumer since a higher price will reduce competition, and higher cost of spectrum will mean that the cost will eventually have to be borne by the consumer. At the same time, at least in my case, the quality of service from standalone ISPs has been ridiculously poor.
