Even when they are fighting bitter battles for marketshares, India’s cellular operators seem to be agreeing on one thing at least. Roping in a single vendor for mobile instant messaging. The GSM operators’ association, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), have partnered with fastmobile and its technology partner Jataayu Software for IM services for its nine member companies.
This is probably the first time COAI is striking a deal on behalf of the members. It could be probably because GSM Association had launched a Personal IM initiative at the 2006 3GSM World Congress. The tie-up will provide subscribers with features such as presence-based address books, email, instant messaging and content-sharing IM buddies for events like ICC World Cup Cricket, says a statement. They also plan to create commercial opportunities such as person-to-person commerce and contextual advertising services.
