Telecoms.com has a good story (reg. req.) on how the decision to include mobile music downloads into UK’s official singles chart will influence it. Industry watchers have predicted that the inclusion will bring a broader range of music to the top rankings, but some mobile music executives say they are skeptical about such forecasts.
“What sells well isn’t a big back catalog,” says Ed Brewster, head of communications for 3 UK. “It is the songs of the moment, the latest hits.” He adds that if an old James Brown track appeared in the charts, it would be included on the 3 UK portal, meaning that mobile music is more likely to reinforce the chart than influence it.
But the story says that even if mobile music doesn’t have a significant effect on the charts’ composition, the increased exposure afforded digital music by the OCC’s announcement will stimulate sales of full-track downloads.
