Earnings: Sony Ericsson Reaches Record Profits In 4Q; Strong Music Phone Sales A Factor

Strong sales of the Walkman digital music phones helped triple 4Q06 net profit for Sony Ericsson Wednesday. The telco’s earnings report cited significant demand for its Cyber-shot camera phones and robust growth in Latin America, Asia Pacific and Europe for the forecast-beating record pre-tax profit.
— Pretax profit rose to $648.3 million from $265.8 million in the same period of 2005.
— Net profit rose to $577.3 million, up from $185.9 million in the same period of December 2005. Total sales came to $4.9 billion, up 64 percent from 2005, as its average selling price per handset was higher than expected at $189.
— The company shipped 26 million phones in the quarter, up 61 percent from the 16.1 million in the fourth-quarter of 2005. The firm sold 60 million music-enabled phones last year as overall sales rose by 23 million to 74.8 million units.
