David Pogue, New York Times technology columnist and creator of The Missing Manuals book series, returned to Macworld last week to host “Macworld Live! With David Pogue,” where he treated the crowd to a batch of funny videos that he claims will likely never see the light of day again thanks to the cluelessness of Discovery network executives and people in general.
Pogue recently filmed six episodes of a new TV series titled ”It’s All Geek to Me,” which airs in February on The Science Channel, Discovery HD and Discovery Europe. One segment of the series was ‘Not Coming Up,’ in which Pogue teased segments of the show that weren’t real, demonstrating how to:
- Play a mini-DVD from a camcorder in your set-top DVD player by gluing the tiny disc to a large disc with Elmer’s glue
- Extend the reception of your digital cell phone by wearing a hat made of tin foil
- Access the iPod’s hidden projector mode using a button combo
- Remove a stuck memory card by smashing a camera open with a hammer
- Edit video by cutting the magnetic tape with scissors and taping it back together
Why won’t this funny clips be a part of the show? According to Pogue, everyone he showed them to believed them to be true. He even pleaded with the top Discovery executive, asking ‘Are people really going to believe these are true?’
Answered the Discovery head, “I did.”
