Universal Channel took its first step in a planned Latin America expansion today with the launch of its first Mexican offering. The NBCU Global Networks property has an agreement with Mexican wireless provider Telcel that gives its subscribers access to original content from Universal Studios. Universal has a deal with mobile applications provider Proteus to distribute mobisodes and other content. For Proteus, the deal represents its second branded mobile storefront for the company in Latin America. MyFOX provided Proteus with its first entry and the company now has connectivity to more than 120 million subscribers throughout Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Brasil and Ecuador. The Universal initiative is expected to increase Proteus’ penetration to 200 million mobile users by year-end. Universal has not said which country is plans to enter next as part of its Latin American coverage program.
