The Indian gaming industry has been estimated to be around $48 million in 2006 and is expected to cross $424 million by 2010, growing at a CAGR of 72 percent between 2006-2010. A NASSCOM Animation and Gaming Industry report foretells a human capital shortage that can restrict growth. It puts forth the case for the Government to support the Animation and Gaming Industry in India, with assistance in manpower development, infrastructure provisioning, direct and indirect investments.

According to Zee News, the mobile and console gaming together contributes nearly 77 per cent of the total gaming market in the country.
Update:
Business Standard does an overview of the console gaming scene in India: apparently, Sony holds demonstrations to showcase the PS2 – at Sony World outlets, colleges and malls. The challenge lies in overcoming the mindset that gaming as a waste of time, so they’re focusing on telling people that gaming will help their children thing faster and be alert and attentive. The industry also intends to lobby for reduction in import duties on consoles (currently at around 37 percent)
