Update: Offline channel conflicts hamper online sales of consumer durables, and 30,000 units are sold online as compared to 10million offline. Online sales, however, are growing at 30-35%. NRI’s account for 60% of online sales according to Arindham Bose, Head of Online sales, LG Electronics India. Mirc Electronics is developing their own website, as are two Chinese brands. Godrej & Boyce plans to launch an e-commerce portal – godrej-lifespace.com, reports Business Standard. The site will primarily cater to people in the 25-30 age group, and allow NRI’s to gift Godrej products.
I wonder if there’s a move on to replicate the airline ticketing model here – manufacturers will put up their products and deals and e-commerce portals can aggregate these deals and offer distribution services. More manufacturers will have to come on board, though, and distribution of physical goods isn’t the same as mailing or emailing tickets.
