London-based Truphone, which provides VoIP services for WiFi enabled phones, has scored $24.5 million in first round funding from seven investors according to TMCnet. The funding round was led by Wellington Partners, a leading pan-European VC, along with global media groups Independent News & Media and Burda Digital Ventures. They join existing investors Eden Ventures and business angels. The funding will be used to expand the number of handsets which support the service (currently its some Nokia devices) and promote the service in other countries. Skype is waiting for the mobile networks’ data plans to become cheap enough to make VoIP viable rather than go the WiFi route.
