Sprint-CableCos JV To Deliver Mobile TV Through MobiTV Service

If Verizon is launching its service, and Apple is announcing its phone, why should others be left behind: The Sprint-Cable Companies Joint Venture is gearing up to extend the video services it offers to mobile phones. The venture – which was formed last year to offer converged services in a quadruple play bringing together video content, VOIP and wireless and wireline – will use the latest version of MobiTV’s mobile television and service platform to deliver the mix of “live and on-demand mobile television content from familiar cable television channels.”
The deal will also see the venture offering users an electronic programming guide on their mobile phones complete with listings and episode summaries displayed based on the user’s zip code and cable channel line-up. Users will also be able to purchase and view premium channels from within the application using their mobile phones. The UI is designed to be very similar to the programming guide on the TV.
